- Ha ha ha! Now, that's a good question, indeed!

[Ami blinked, then, and then turned and greet the person who had just come into the room.]

...Commander Inverse! So you're going to be part of the commitee, too?

[Lina grinned, and waved her hands.]

- Indeed I am! I mean, rank doth have privilages, right? And Miss Ichinose's works have been the talk of the town, or the local academic equivelent at least, for months and months, after all.

[She then turned around, and looked across the room.]

...It's been a while since I actually took any students, though - Ever since I became the Commander, and then the Commander and Mayor, I've been so busy it's not funny!

[Though she had taught that Gwendolen Chant girl a couple of things when they'd both been tossed into Gwen's world, if her somewhat fuzzy memories about that matter could be trusted. That had been pretty fun, actually, Lina thought with a grin.]

- Did you know I used to teach a couple of regular courses at the local Infinity U when I just arrived here? Those were fun times, yeah...

Kotomi's expression turned to that of shock. This will be quite a proposal to defend.

"H-Hello, Commander Lina!" Kotomi bows deeply, thick book and all, frankly thankful it had managed to impress her, "I would like to speak of the reasons behind my proposals and discoveries, here. I would be humbled if you decided to choose me as your student."

Kotomi was soon to become a doctor, but she knew, one never truly knew everything. As she walked humbly behind Commander Lina, coming to admire how much she had done in this universe, the respect she commanded and things she learned...

"I believe we make our own time," Kotomi looked up, strangely relaxed as she pondered about the heart of her study, "we live it in only direction, but we do what we wish to use it for. it's so amazing that you got the time to teach others, Lina-sama."

The clicking of her heels slowed down as they approached the main forum, and Kotomi's formal Infinity University dress waved down to almost a stop. "Sometime I would like to spend time with you and Ami-chan, Lina-sama."

...Ohh, a field trip, you mean? I'd love that, yeah...

[Lina laughed, and then called out - ]

- Hey Mizzy! Please try to find a place to fit a field trip with Miss Kotomi into my schedule, OK?

[One of Lina's AI assistants's holos smiled happily at that.]

...I'll get on that right away, Ms Lina!

[Ami's eyes, in the meanwhile, had widened quite a bit.]

- Ahem. About that field trip, Commander Inverse...

...Oh, you can come too, of course, Ami-chan!

[Lina grinned - ]

[- And that was when there was a shimmer of light, and suddenly, an elevator door appeared on a wall that hadn't even existed a moment before!]

[Lina started for a moment, and then sighed a bit she saw two people walk out of the elevator door.]

...Oi, oi, you two...

- Oh, excuse me! It's been a while, Commander Lina...

[Anthy said with a michevious smile, while Utena just gave them a jaunty wave.]

...Hey, Kotomi-chan, Ami-chan!

[Utena called out with a smile.]

- Long time no see, eh?

A field trip through other universes was something Kotomi wished to try on her own. A chance to explore other worlds was something she had only in her wildest dreams. And now beside Lina, and Ami...

She bows to Commander Lina in thanks, before turning to the shimmers of light, "the elevator...?"

Kotomi was surprisingly knowledgeable in the ways Infinity University worked. She formed a smile as soon as she recognized them.

"Utena-san, Anthy-san, hello." Kotomi walked to them, holding both of their hands. Kotomi herself had grown since the last time they met, back at her parents' house. Now, Kotomi was not only waring the university's uniform with pride, she was taller, smarter, and even curvier and stronger.

"I would be honored to have all of you as my judges. I have so much to speak of this..." Kotomi, in spite of her whispered voice, was clearly eager to speak about this, her discoveries, but realizing she would have to defend her discoveries just as well. She almost led them all, eagerly, to the forum.

We're honored to be part of this commitee too, Kotomi-san!

[Anthy smiled, and then, it was time to start!]

[Several robots came over with cups of tea, water and other things, and put them in front of all the people involved, including Kotomi herself.]

- Please introduce yourself, Ichinose Kotomi-san, and then start with a short summary of your thesis.

[One of the AIs said. Lina grinned, and waved a hand.]

...Oh, and please do try to make it understandable a layperson too, OK? It's a summary, after all, not the entire thing!

[Ami, in the meanwhile, was looking at all the people on the commitee, chuckling. There were so many people from so many professions here - Most of them were academics of some kind or another, true, but not all by a long shot.]

[And then, her eyes widened as she saw a small budding branch in a pot on one of the desks, and a slightly transparent looking beautiful woman in a kimono sitting behind it, a sparkling aura surrounding her.]

[...Wait, wasn't that lady one of the cherry tree spirits that lived in one of the local shrines? Ami blinked, trying to remember more about her - She was considered a minor deity in her own right, if Ami remembered things correctly...]

Preparation had all the time Kotomi Ichinose had needed. Presentation, data, tea, water, table with white cloth, everything was set in order for the podium with the judges that would be in front of her, right in front of the mass of students that now awaited what would be her thesis, among them spotting her friends from Hikarizawa. Kyou waved a hand from one of the seats on the back, beside Nagisa and company, wishing her luck.

Behind her was the curved, gigantic screen of what she would be speaking about. Her own eyes were swift to notice the new presence, the branch and woman in a kimono that had an aura of its own materializing behidn them, observing, one of the many spirits and youkai knowing the repercussions this would have.

Kotomi took a deep breath, and exhaled. She opened her eyes.

"We all hail from thousands of worlds out of untold billions," Kotomi's voice was solid. This was the most firm she had ever been in her life, words that she had wanted to speak ever since she was but a child, "we have seen thanks to worlds like Infinity the trade of culture and knowledge that we can all gain from communications like these, and the greatest civilizations throughout history had always been those that had allowed themselves to become the centers of their worlds."

With a wave of her hand, the screen behind her formed two things: A black circle spreading dozens of arrows pointing at multiple figures, and another with a single black figure walking with a cane, with his arrow pointing at a black world, which lead to another, and another...

"Among the most common experiences with the multiverse are those of beings transported, without their consent, onto new universes for whatever purposes there might be -- worlds that are not as kind as Infinity was for all of us. In the better cases, and often the aftermath of these new lives, are the beginnings of travelers that choose to explore new universes, but often alone, or at most with their tightnit groups of friends, with the duty to share everything they had obtained learned from all of these worlds."

Kotomi closed her eyes. With over a hundred eyes set on her, a brief feeling of fear washed over her that she did not show, and tamed as quickly as it appeared, when she knew this was the moment to defend her thesis.

"What I sought from all of this, were the means to not just allow a single person to move throughout universes as a lot of heroes we have known while in here."

The screen behind Kotomi showed the extent of her project, a dimensional rift the size of a city, portal that could span entire populations to move.

"Instead, I sought for the means to allow mass migrations throughout multiple universes."

[Lina nodded at that, and then turned toward the screen.]

- Very interesting! Have you thought of the risks inherent in such an endevor, though?

[She chuckled, then - To think that she was now in a position of telling somebody else that what they were thinking of might be too risky...]

[And that was when a handsome man in a uniform smiled at all of them.]

...I sure wouldn't mind having a prototype or three of those things on my ship, though, ha ha ha -

- Thank you, Captain Kirk.

[The AIs nodded at that, and made of point of making one of their avatars make a note of that fact in a virtual notebook.]

Please do raise your hand before speaking out the next time, though...

...Yeah, sorry, sorry.

[Captain Kirk said, and then gave Kotomi a bright shiny grin, while some of the other people there facepalmed.]

- Please do carry on, young lady - You're doing swimmingly!

[identity profile] violinsnbobbles.livejournal.com 2016-05-03 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
The question, as heavy as it was, did not faze Kotomi when she heard it. She turned to the young Captain's comment, likewise unsurprised to hear these comments and questions.

As a matter of fact, by the way Kotomi walked back to aim at the screen, controller in hand, as she materialized a symbol of slavery and death (http://i.imgur.com/l1u9fET.jpg) in the language of the multiverse.

"The multiverse is not alien to enemies that already cross universes. There are empires that profit on this, the absolute control of dimensions and races for their own growth, and dry entire homes to barren wastelands."

Kotomi closed her eyes. The Forerunner, that enemy on the Viraine Mountains, that monster that tried to kill her and failed... were another possibility. She reopened them to continue, memories in the back of her head, replaced with cold analysis.

"The possibility for singular heroes to cross through universes, however, is already available to many of us," Kotomi turned Captain Kirk, "not just in starship engines, currently using experimental technology aboard the UNSC Infinity, but even objects as small as transplants on the back of people's necks, or even just the attention of otherworldly beings.

The screen darkened to Kotomi's next click, the symbol of oppression fading and rusting. "The Combine was crippled by the actions of one hero, who was able to cross through universes, and bring an end to their paths, as they remain stranded on many universes, and numerous heroes with the same power to cross through dimensions hunted down and defeated the heads of the empire, one by one, under his lead."

'Anticitizen One'. Kotomi clutched the books written by that man on her chest.

"That weakness has made them much easier prey." The image materialized to the silhouettes of soldiers, magical girls, and superheros, fighting against the masked forces of oppression. While the amount of people outplaced by the war grew beneath the screen. A dozen, hundred, thousands... "Some of our fellow heroes continue that fight even now. But the question remains regarding the displaced billions by those wars, and more heroes in need of these abilities. People in need of opportunity of new homes. And yet, those people should not be seen as refugees. Our enemies have them, and we should not deny ourselves the use of this technology for the common good."

Kotomi spread her arms. The image behind her brightened, and a portal materializing a lush, green world took place.

"They should be seen as populace, able to create new worlds and homes, use the technologies used for death, now to allow all to grow and prosper."

[The other commitee membered looked at each other, and started to talk among themselves...And that was when Commander Lina Inverse waved her hand, and stood up again.]

...I think I get what you're saying, Ms Ichinose, but on the other hand, I don't think that Infinity itself is going to be willing or able to take in billions and billions of extra people, to be frank. Whoever or whatever that is running Infinity seems to be pretty good at making sure Infinity as a whole doesn't bite off more then it can chew, and Infinity has also not been leery about cutting off bits of itself and rebooting them if it deems that to be neccesary, so...

[And Captain Kirk raised his hand, too.]

- So what are we talking of now, Ms Ichinose? Empty planets? Gigantic space habitats? And in what parts of the Multiverse are we supposed to go and stash 'em?
