[Kyubey sighed, then, and shifted his perception field's setting a little, so she could see him.]
- Here I am, Nagisa - What is it?
[Oh, he could tell already that she was going to ask him to do something truly inconvienient, even before she opened her mouth, buuut.]
[Nagisa took a deep breath, then, and opened her mouth.]
- Oh, Kyubey - Could you make a Contract with my Mama, too? Then she wouldn't have to worry about getting sick anymore, and we could even fight the Witches together!
[Kyubey groaned inwardly. Oh, great, it was one of those requests.]
...Nagisa, please. Not everybody can become a Magical Girl, you know?
[This was technically true, as he had met some humans who just seemed to be totally Un-Contractable by any means, for whatever reasons, though they were few and far in between - And a male Contractee would not become a Magical Girl, in any case.]
[But on the other hand, the girl's mother did seem to have a fair amount of potential, even in her current sickly state, and it might be interesting to see what the dynamics would be with a mother and daughter Magical Girl - Magical Woman? - Duo.]
[Hmmmm. He would have to think about this, wouldn't he.]
[And so he smiled up at her and said - ]
- I'll go and take another look at her, since you asked - But please don't get your hopes up, OK?
[Mami frowned a bit at that] "but Kyubey, would that be possible? I mean, wouldit count, even if she is not a girl really anymore?" "True normally magical girls are around your and Nagisa's age group and it is prefered. But sometimes there are times in which an older girl or grown woman could be contracted as well. Why just a few years ago a schoolteacher was conteacted!" [It has been a long while since he has seen her in action though. if it werent for the fact she was Madoka Kaname's homreoom teacher he may have forgotten about her.
...But wait! What about boys? Aren't there any Magical Boys? At all?
[Even the Beautiful Moonstar Series had the Starlight Knight, even if he wasn't really a Magical Girl, Nagisa thought. It was a pity - The Knight was one of her favorite characters, after all, even if Mami had repeatedly told her that being a real Magical Girl wasn't much like the stuff in mangas or animes.]

- Oh, that? There have been some males who have been deemed worthy of being offered a Contract, actually, here and there - But it doesn't happen very often, I must admit. Girls your age are much more suited for this kind of thing, you see...

[And so he watched the two Magical Girls go down the corridors, and sighed. OK, then...]

[Kyubey staring at a woman in a hospital bed, thinking. Nagisa's mother was vaguly familiar, now that he thought about it - She'd been a friend of one of his Contractees, and he'd considered recruiting her too, once. But then, the girl in question had gone Witch much earlier then he'd thought she would, and...]
[No, wait - Oh, yes, he really did remember her, now. The inconvienient little thing had actually gone Witch right in the middle of her classroom, during class. And the woman in front of him had been -]
[- One of the very few survivors of that incident.]
[Uh, oh. Oh, yes, he really did have a bad feeling about this, now, never mind that he wasn't supposed to have feelings in the first place, ha ha ha -]
[Kyubey went out of the room Momoe Naoko was in, and started to think.]
[He was still thinking when Nagisa and Mami came back.]
...We couldn't find any Witches, or Familiars either, for that matter...
[Nagisa grumped, and then her face lighted up when she caught sight of Kyubey under the sofa.]
- Kyubey! Did you see Mama? How did the Contract go?
[Kyubey came out from under the sofa then, and looked up at her.]
...I am sorry, Nagisa, but your mother is not a good Puella Magi candidate, I am afraid - I do not think making a Contract with her is a good idea at all!
[And that wasn't a lie at all, really. ]
- I've made Contracts with people who weren't good matches before, you see, and some of them just died the very next day after they became Magi, just like that!
[That wasn't a lie, either. Of course, it was another matter entirely if Momoe Naoko would turn out like that, if she ever made a Contract with any Incubator, buuut.]
[And so, he looked up at her, and pasted on his "slightly apologetic" expression.]

[Nagisa immeditaely looked downcast at that] "N-no, I dont.. I dont want her to die..."" She tried to push down that knowledge [Polina came up, notseeing Kyubey] "there you are Nagisa chan1 We were wondering where you went off to!" She noticed her expression "Whats wrong sweetie?"
[Nagisa bit her lip, and sighed a bit when she realized that Nurse Polina couldn't seem to see Kyubey at all.]
[And then, she forced herself to smile up at the nurse, brightly.]
- It's nothing, nursie! I went to the bathroom, and then I went outside with Mami Onee-san for a bit - The party was fun, but it was getting so noisy!
[The nurse looked at Mami, who nodded back at her with a smile.]
...I'm sorry, Ma'am - We really should have told somebody first, but we weren't planning to stay out for more then five minutes, you see...
[The nurse nodded at that with a tired smile.]
...Oh, it's all right, Tomoe-san. It's just that...
[And then, she looked at Nagisa, and bit her lip.]
- It's just that - Um...Nagisa-chan, you mother - She began to feel a bit poorly at the party, so we had to bring her back to her hospital room and give her some more medicine, all right? Dr Noguchi says she's OK now, so you don't have to worry about it or anything, but...
[Nagisa's face fell back into a sad expression at that ] "oh..." She looked down "May I see her?" "Of course you can, sweetie. though she's probably sleeping now." [Nagisa nodded and went over to her mother's room. As she approached her, her heart sunk at seeing how sick and frail in her bed.] "hi Mama..."
[She blinked a couple of times, and then reached out to her daughter.]
- Oh, dear...
[Everything was so blurry! Naoko closed her eyes again, hoping whatever that was wrong would clear up on it's own - The rest of her body was in bad enough shape without her bloody eyes getting messed up as well, damn it.]
[And then she opened her eyes again, though she still couldn't see very well, and determindly beckoned her daughter close.]
"Oh Mama..." Nagisa hugged her, shaking a bit "I shouldn't have left the party.." "Its all right sweetie... I know you had things to take care of.. besides, Im happy I had to be a downer and pass out again..."" She stroked her dauhghters hair "You should go bacck and enjoy it" 'nuh-huh Mama. I want to stay with you!"" "If that's what you want Nagisa... you know, I'm happy for you... youve been so energetic these past few weeks ever since you got better... you went out and had adevtures, learned new things.. found a wonderful big sister... " "yes Mama! It has been great! And soon youll be well enough to join me!" "that wuld be, nice..." her muther coughed. Nagisa was pushing down the subconcious knwledge about the likelyhood of her Mama....
[No, no, no, her Mama wasn't going to die, she just wasn't. So there!]
[And then, she put out her hand, and put it on her mother's arm, remembering how she'd healed her own wounds after the battle with the strange puffball things. Maybe, just maybe, she could heal her dear Mama, too?]
[And that was when Kyubey sighed, and poked his head out from under the bed Naoko was in. Nagisa almost eep'd. Kyubey had looked almost - almost creepy when he did that. And how had he gotten under the bed without her noticing it, anyway? Oh, she did know Kyubey usually couldn't be seen at all by people who weren't Magical Girls or potential Magical Girls, but...]
[Kyubey, in the meanwhile, was looking up at her, impassively.]
...I'm not sure how well that would work at all, Momoe Nagisa - Most Puella Magi can heal their own bodies instinctively, but healing other people's bodies seems to be a different matter entirely, I'm afraid.
[And then he smiled up at her again. Nagisa swallowed a bit - Had Kyubey's smile always looked so fake and pasted on? And if it had, why hadn't she noticed that before today?]
- However, I have known Magical Girls who actually were pretty good at healing other people's bodies, too, so please do feel free to try. Who knows, you may be one of the people with a knack for those things, after all!
"R-right..." Nagisa out her hand on her mother's head and focused, trying to bring up some healing magic.Make her mama all right! ...but nothing happened... Kyubey shrugged "I suppose that is not one of your abilities after all." "Th-then I'll find someone who can!" "Unfortunately there are not currently any magical girls withthat abilitiy within this area. "
...What about the Magical Girls outside this area, then?
[Kyubey sighed a little at that.]
- Well, there was this Magical Girl in Hokkaido, now that I thought about it, but I haven't seen her for a while now. You cab ask Mami about it, if you want - They met once, and Mami should still have her phone number, if she hasn't erased it already.
[And then, he paused a bit. Now that he thought about it...Hmmm.]
[The former Princess Rillanne had once been pretty handy with healing magics, strangely enough considering her personality, but...]
[Ah yes, she was currently here in this building, her twin as well. And it seems they had another flicker of their past lives. He would have to check it out. ] "If you'll excuse me, Nagsia, I have some business to attend to." "Ok.. by Kyubey kitty..." She felt somewhat glad that he was leaving. She rested her head on her mother's breat, making sure not to make it uncomfortbale for her. Kyubey hopped out the window and nimbily traververesed the narrow ledge. Yes, little Nagisa Momoe was starting to deteriorate, he could tell. It was not be long until she fell. the prepubescent magical girls usually tended not to last very long anyway. Still she did quite good while she lasted. And her witch would be a very good one indeed!
[meanwhile in another room in the hosptial, where Rin and Len lay unconcious in their beds, their mother, a very pretty blond vestern woman whom they resembled, came in very worried]
[Annabelle sighed, and then sat down on a chair besides her children's hospital beds.]
[And her life and research had both been going so well up to just a few days ago, too. Rin and Len's mother felt a bubble of hysterical laughter trying to push itself out of her, and pushed it down with an effort. Calm down, Kagamine Annabelle, you're a mother - Dealing with emergencies that your children get mixed up in is part of your job description, remember?]
[And in the meanwhile, Nagisa had gone and found Mami, and had asked her about what Kyubey had told her.]
[Mami nodded at Nagisa's words, and took out her phone.]
- He probably means Mizuchi-san, though I didn't know that she was supposed to be good with healing magics. I'll try calling her now, OK?
"o-ok..." Nagisa fidgeted as she waited as Mami called. She still had the numbers of all the magical girls she had been aquainted with before. Of course pretty much none of them had called her back, nor seemed intersted in a partnership. Except for a certain red head... after a few tries, she sighed] "It said the nu,ber is no longer in use..." [Nagisa groaned at that in disappointment
[eventually, the twins stirered and woke up blearily] "..rin... Len..?" "..mother...?" "oh my darklings"she embraced them "are you all right?"
[Len mumbled as he woke up. That word sounded strangely familiar, but...]
[And in the meanwhile, Annabelle was blinking, too. OK, why had she just called her children "Darklings", again?]
[But never mind that, even though the word sounded strangely familiar. She had other things to talk about, now.]
- What happened? I was so worried, Rin, Len...
[And in the meanwhile, in a different place in the hospital...]
[Mami was still staring at her phone, thinking. Mizuchi-san had this bad habit of wrecking her mobile phones regularly, now that she thought about it. Hmmm...]

[She called yet another phone number, and started to talk.]
- So do you have her new phone number? Oh, thank you, Kurebayashi-san, I'll owe you one for that...
[And then, she takes a deep breath, and starts to fiddle with the phone again.]
...Nagisa-chan? Just - Wait a moment, OK? Mizuchi-san can be sort of difficult to talk to, now that I think about it...
"..mother...?" "Yu're back.." "Yes, Im back. and I was so worried when I recied the call form the hospital!" she hugged them "We're fight. Well, I dont now, what happened really..." Len frowned "I guess we faintted or somehting.."
[the phone rang again. it was Kurebaryashi again.] "Just why would you want her number anyway, Tomoe?" "I need to ask her a favor" "And why would she grant a favor for you?" "Well, its not quite for me. It's for a very sweet little girl I know..." Mami fidgeted "..so?"
...What happened? You two don't regularly collapse at you concerts, right?
[Annabelle sighed, and patted her daughter's face. Rin woke up with a groan, then.]
- Wha...Mama? You're home already???
[And in the meanwhile, a fluffy white thing was looking at the Kagamine family from under a nearby bed, slowly blinking it's eyes. The twins's mother was vaguely familiar, too, now that he thought about it, Kyubey mused.]
[Interesting, indeed - But from when did he know her, or somebody like her? And where?]
[And outside the hospital...]
[Mami sighed, and turned around.]
Oh, come on, Kurebayashi-san, stop being such a wet blanket - I'll owe you one, OK? And my word is good, honest!
[Kurebarashi sighed at that.]
...Fine, fine. You'd better not blame me if things go pearshaped, though - Mizuchi Rinko is even weirder then she used to be, nowadays.
[And then, she told Mami Mizuchi Rinko's newest phone number.]
[Mami took a deep breath again, then, and called the new number, hoping it was still in use. The phone rang for a while, and then there was a crunching sound, like somebody had just dropped their phone.]
[And then, there was a sigh, and a cold giggle.]
...Tomoe Mami. What in the world are you calling me for, anyway? I thought you'd never get tired of sucking up to that white furry creep!
[mami blinked] "sucking up? furry white creep? what do you mean?" [could she have been talking about Kyubey? ] "whatever." the girl scoffed "so what do you want" "Can you still heal sicknesses? My magical girl protogee, her mother is very ill. and it is veyr hard on little Nagisa chan. She is just a child! If you could save hermother, we could be in your debt..."
"Yes, I do arrived back, but then I got a call you were in the hospital" "Well we had a gig... " "We did rin, but I think we must have passed out somehow.." Len added "oh... huh.."rn shrugged and hugged her mother "welcome home! I'm so happy!" [they talked for a while] "by the way mother, what is that reasearch you told us abaout?
...Sure, sure, I can still heal peeps. I gotta warn you though, Tomoe - It doesn't work on everybody, not by a long shot.
[And then, Mizuchi Rinko groaned, and started to rub her neck - Not that Mami could see what the other girl was doing on the other side of the phone connection, of course.
- And you'd damn well better pay me for even trying to do that shit. It's exhausting, damn it!
[Mami stared at her phone, then, and sighed.]
- Alright, then. How much?
[They eventually agreed on 3 Grief Seeds for Mizuchi Rinko to try to heal Nagisa's mother, and two extra Seeds after that if she succeeded in making her any better. If Rinko actually succeeded in curing Momoe Naoko entirely, she'd get two more Grief Seeds in addition to that - Which meant that Mami had to get 7 Grief Seeds ready right now soonest, or else.]
[Mami sighed, then, and clinked off the phone. Oh, well - She'll find some way to do this, somehow. She always had been good at wriggling out of dangerous situations, after all.]
[...Except for the one time that she hadn't managed to do that at all.]
[Inside the hospital...]
[Annabelle sighed at that, and then took out her laptop.]
Well, you see...The problem is, I have no idea how to explain it in any way that makes sense, but...
[And then, she showed her children something on the computer screen. Len blinked, and then tilted his head.]
...Wait a minute, waaait a minute...That couldn't be us, right?
"[she looked grim, then turned back to Nagisa] "why don't we go to the party now Nagisa?" "I guess..."
[they stared again of the portrait of a pair of young, identical goldenhaired twins, a boy and a girl. they looked exactly like them.] "this is apparently princess Rillianne and Prince Allen of Luciefienne. rilianne ended up the crown pprincess of Lucifienne and became the ruler while Allen was appently exiled form his royal status at a young age for political reasons..."
...On the other hand...Maybe you should go stay with your Mama for now. The party's almost going to be over anyway, after all...
[She patted Nagisa on the head, thinking, and then smiled.
Nagisa-chan? Can you do something for me? I have to go hunt up some Witches in a hurry now, and I know I promised to train you and all that, but I don't think I have to time to do that right now.
[She already had 3 extra Grief Seeds on hand, but she didn't want to give those to Mizuchi-san unless there was no other choice whatsoever - She'd been keeping those for emergencies, after all.]
- So I'll appreciate it a lot if you just could wait here for me, OK?
[And in the meanwhile, in another hospital room...]
[Len was looking at the picture, quizzically.]
- So this is the Princess of Evil, huh? She doesn't look much like those old illustrations in the musical versions, that's for sure...
Nagisa nodded "All right..." "I probably won't be able to come back tonight, or possibly tomorow. But I'll be back as soon as I can" she kissed Nagisa's forehead "you be a good girl now" "I promise, Mami neechan..."
"well here if a portrait of the princess a few years later once she waas crowned ruler" she showed a picture of a painting of Rin, looking high and mighty in a gold dress
[Nagisa waved, a sad expression on her face, as Mami transformed and jumped out of the window with a brave smile. She'd learned to read Mami's expressions pretty well by now, she thought - And though she didn't want to admit it, even to herself, her poor Senpai looked like she was planning to bravely go charging into the mouth of hell or something.]
[...And it was all Nagisa herself's fault, too. If she'd only known better then to waste her Wish on something like a piece of cake - ]
[But no, no, she couldn't afford to think about that right now. Her Mama was sick, and she needed her to be strong and brave.]
[...She just had to keep on chugging on, until this Mizuchi-san came, and fixed her Mama all up. Just like Nagisa herself should have, in the first place.]

[And that was when Kyubey sighed, and poked his head out from under the bed Naoko was in. Nagisa almost eep'd. Kyubey had looked almost - almost creepy when he did that. And how had he gotten under the bed without her noticing it, anyway? Oh, she did know Kyubey usually couldn't be seen at all by people who weren't Magical Girls or potential Magical Girls, but...]
[Kyubey, in the meanwhile, was looking up at her, impassively.]
...I'm not sure how well that would work at all, Momoe Nagisa - Most Puella Magi can heal their own bodies instinctively, but healing other people's bodies seems to be a different matter entirely, I'm afraid.
[And then he smiled up at her again. Nagisa swallowed a bit - Had Kyubey's smile always looked so fake and pasted on? And if it had, why hadn't she noticed that before today?]
- However, I have known Magical Girls who actually were pretty good at healing other people's bodies, too, so please do feel free to try. Who knows, you may be one of the people with a knack for those things, after all!

"Ok.. by Kyubey kitty..." She felt somewhat glad that he was leaving. She rested her head on her mother's breat, making sure not to make it uncomfortbale for her.
Kyubey hopped out the window and nimbily traververesed the narrow ledge. Yes, little Nagisa Momoe was starting to deteriorate, he could tell. It was not be long until she fell. the prepubescent magical girls usually tended not to last very long anyway. Still she did quite good while she lasted. And her witch would be a very good one indeed!
[meanwhile in another room in the hosptial, where Rin and Len lay unconcious in their beds, their mother, a very pretty blond vestern woman whom they resembled, came in very worried]

[Mami sighed, and turned around.]

[Mami took a deep breath again, then, and called the new number, hoping it was still in use. The phone rang for a while, and then there was a crunching sound, like somebody had just dropped their phone.]

- And you'd damn well better pay me for even trying to do that shit. It's exhausting, damn it!
[Mami stared at her phone, then, and sighed.]
- Alright, then. How much?
[They eventually agreed on 3 Grief Seeds for Mizuchi Rinko to try to heal Nagisa's mother, and two extra Seeds after that if she succeeded in making her any better. If Rinko actually succeeded in curing Momoe Naoko entirely, she'd get two more Grief Seeds in addition to that - Which meant that Mami had to get 7 Grief Seeds ready right now soonest, or else.]
[Mami sighed, then, and clinked off the phone. Oh, well - She'll find some way to do this, somehow. She always had been good at wriggling out of dangerous situations, after all.]
[...Except for the one time that she hadn't managed to do that at all.]
[Inside the hospital...]
[Annabelle sighed at that, and then took out her laptop.]
