[She caught up to her mother and tugged at her arm] "Mama! Please snap out of it! It's just an illuion!! "She can not hear you" Kyubey said, sitting down on a pillow "She and the other's were put under a witches curse. " "A witche's, curse?" her eyes widened " Yes. They are under a spell. The only way to wake them up is if a magical girl defeats the host witch of this labyrinth." "Oh!" ashe bounced eagerly "I just saw a magical girl here! Miss Hanako!" "Ah yes, I am aware she is here in this location. Ah, there she is."
[Hanako blinked] Wait a minute... Papa? What are you doing here?" [she saw the itch kiss upon him] "oh no... now it's personal!!" she snarled. She caught sight of the witch and charged over with a scream, all power ready
[The Witch looked at her, still looking just like her deceased mother, and her eyes widened.]
- Ha-Hanako-chan?
[She then looked at the creepy Hanako doll, her eyes widening even more.]
...Why are they two of you???
[Hanako, in the meanwhile, was inceased indeed.]
- Oh, shut up, you, how dare you pretend to be my mother -
[And that was when Hanako's father stood up, cletching his hands.]
...What in the world are you talking about! Sit down and eat your dinner, how dare you talk to your mother like this!
[The Hanako doll tilted her head, looked a bit sad at this - She wasn't the one who was acting up, after all. The stuffed animal version of Anthony meowed at her, sounding concerned.]
[Kyubey, in the meanwhile, was looking up at Nagisa, a fake concerned expression on hsi face.]
...Yes, there she is - But I'm not at all sure she'll be able destroy the Witch in time to save your mother and the other people, I'm afraid - There're at least 7 Familiars wandering around here, after all.
[Nagisa stared at him, her eyes widening. What did he mean, he wasn't sure Hanako-san could save her mother? Hanako-san was a Magical Girl, and Magical Girls went and saved people, right? That was what they were all about!]
...Wha...What's a Familiar?
[Kyubey sighed at that.]
- Familiars are monsters that Witches tend to produce - They're sort of like minor Witches, and they can get upgraded to full Witches themselves, if you're unlucky. They're quite dangerous in their own way, so.
[And then he sighed again, theratically.]
...Oh, if only there was another Magical Girl who could come and help her fight that Witch and her Familiars...
"Stay out of this, Papa!! That's not really Mama, you're just under a spell!" Hanako yelled as she pushed him out of the way, thorny vines swarming around to ensnare any familiars in the area. After making sure he was out of the way safely, she continued her attack against the witch, looking terrifying. She was filled with wrath against the witch, especially at cursing her father and imitating her mother; it made her sad to see hermother's face again, even if it was a fake. And it also stirred up latent angry emotions...] "..why mama... why..." there were tears as she slashed at the witch "why did you have to go... leaving me all alone... Papa doesn't understand... did you understand him either.. did you ever really love him?! Maybe not!! Why did you go with Albert!!! Couldn't you see that Papa loved you"!?! What about me?! We're all apart!! ITS ALL YOUR FAULT!!!!"
"You're right.. she could help..." "Indeed. However," [he tilted his furry head quizzically, upping the cute charm "I would have an idea. How would you, Nagisa Momoe, like to form a contract with me and become a magical girl yourself? " [Nagisa's eyes widened if surprise] "eh?! Me? A magical girl?" "That is right. I have sensed great potential for the role within you." [If it weren't for the disturbing circumstance currently, this would be a dream come true for Nagisa] " You can do that? Well I'm sure you could since your'e a magical kitty. But, What do you mean by a contract? " "Just a formal term really for our agreement. I shall unlock your magical abilities, and furthermore, I shall grant you one wish. In exchange, it shall be your duty to battle this wicked monsters and defend humanity when the time calls for it." [as usual, he leaves out the fine details.] "So? what do you think?
[The Witch wearing Hanako's mother's face jumped away from Hanako, then, biting her lip.]
- But Hanako-chan - It was all a mistake, about Albert-san...He was just a good friend, that's all!
[And then she looked up at her, tears in her eyes.]
...And I didn't really die either - That wasn't real! It was all a bad dream, Hanako-chan - don't you see?
[And someplace nearby in the Witch's Barrier...]
[Nagisa bit her lip, thinking furiously. This really was like something out of the Beautiful Moonstar series, she thought...Though she hadn't realized that the battles the Moonstars went through really were this scary, to be frank.]
- So I make a, um, "contract" with you, and I can be a Magical Girl? With real magic and everything?
[Kyubey smiled up at her, and nodded.]
...Oh, yes you can - And you'll even get a Wish granted in the bargain, like I said!
[He then put on his "I am a wise and experienced Magical Mascot" face.]
...I really can grant you almost any Wish you can think of, you know...
[Nagisa nodded at that - She'd never heard of any of the Magical Mascots in any of the Magical Girl series she heard of ever offering to grant wishes like this, in addition to turning anybody into a Magical Girl, but it did sound like a good bargain, she thought...]
[And that was when Hanako came crashing through the corridors Nagisa and Kyubey were talking in, roaring.]
- Oh, shut up, shut up, you're not real, none of this is, you - you monster!
[The Witch wearing Hanako's mother's visage looked terribly sad, at that.]
...Oh, Hanako-chan...
[Nagisa stared at both of them, and then turned around, looking for her own mother. She managed to catch sight of her just as she was about to go into run of the rooms of this strange place, and quickly ran after her, pulling her over to were she and Kyubey were talking. Nagisa's mother followed her without protest, blank-eyed, though she still smiled into the thin air, talking to her deceased husband.]
...Look, husband! Nagisa is talking already - She's such a smart little girl...
[Oh, no! Nagisa bit her lip, and then stood up as an idea struck her.]
- OK, Kyubey, I'll do it - And I've thought of a really good wish, too! The best!
[Kyubey smiled up at her.]
...All right, then - Let's do this thing!
[And then he gestured at her, and they both ducked behind some lockers.]
[Nagisa took a deep breath.]
- My wish is that I want a cheesecake to appear, and it's not going to be any kind of ordinary cheesecake - It has to be absolutely the very best cheesecake in the world! And it's going to be so good that anybody who eats even a little bit of it would immediately remember all the good things that ever happened to them, and throw off any bad spell anybody put on them! Oh, and they'll regain their sanity even if they weren't under a bad spell, either, because it's just. So. Good!
[And then she took a deep breath.]
...Oh, and it's a magical cheesecake, so it never goes bad, either. So there!
[And Kyubey smiled, as his ears rose into the air with the magical energies swirling around them.]
- Done!
[And a gigantic whole cheesecake in a box started to form right in front of them...]
[Hanako crahed into another room, pining the witch down "I SAID SHUT UP YOU MONSTER!!!!" [and she struck and struck, laughing madly]
[Nagisa gazed wide eyed at the giant magical cheesecake. the sight and smell of it was causing her to alvate. No, she would have to be patient. this was to be shared with her mother." "Oh thank you! It looks so wonderful!" " the contract is made!" [In kyuubey's unseen records, the data of this latest 'transaction' is put in] "Now then, for your part. Hold still, please." [He sidles up closely, then plunges his long appendages into her chest. Nagisa lets out a scream, the pain is immense, as if something very important from being drawn from her. She falls to the floor, and the pain ebbs, the shining light from her chest forming into a prettyegg shaped gold cased jewel] "Go on, take it and accept your destiny. This is your soul gem, the oroof as a magical girl and container for your power." kyubey said pleantly, sitting back. "pretty..." As Nagisa takes it, she feels a new rush of energy, almost like a fresh battery. Shortyly after, the scenery goes back to the normal hospital.
[Hanako has finally defeated the witch. chuckling weakly and splashed with blood. Anothony lays at her feet, gravely injred by the battle. Hanako turns to her still concious father with a cheerful smile "Look Papa! I destroyed the monster! you're safe now! And those nasty men won't be coming back to the garden anymore."
[Hanako's father looked at her, his eyes wide and horrified.]
...You...You killed your mother.
[And then he gulped.]
How could you?
[Hanako stared at him.]
- That wasn't my mother, and that wasn't your wife, either.
[And then she snarled at him.]
...My actual mother ran away with our gardener, and then she got sick and died far away in another country.
[And then she sighed, looking down. She'd liked Albert-san a whole lot, back when she was young, and he'd been so patient with her, teaching her the ins and outs of gardening...]
We didn't even get to see her before she died, because nobody expected her to die in such a simple operation, but she did.
[And then she glared at her father, her eyes beginning to go red, and the dark energies rising around her. Anthony meowed at her feet, starting to look almost as creepy as his stuffed animal version had.]
- Why are you so weak, Papa! I tried so hard to make things right, but you always...you always....
[Hanako's father took a step back, his eyes going even wider.]
...No, no - Don't you see I didn't want to wake up from that dream, even if it was just a dream? ...But then you...you always...
[And then he stopped moving back, and stood up straight, glaring right back at her.]
- And you say she was a fake, but then, what are you? My daughter Hanako was a good girl, she didn't run around with suspicious people and pull money out of thin air!
[Nagisa stared at Hanako and her father from behind a locker, Kyubey at her side.]
[Uh, oh, this didn't look good - This didn't look good at all!]
"...I don't know who you are or where you came form, but you are certainly not my daughter, you psychopath..." [Hanako stared after him as he walked away, shock still, eyes brimming with tears, the grief seed lay abandoned at her feet] "Papa.. please, wait... come bak..." [as she fell to her knees, no one except Kyubey noticed the cracks appearing at her nearly completely black soul gem] [Nagisa whimpered] Poor poor Hanako... She's probably cursed too!" She then got an idea and scooped out a piece of cheesecake, at perfect creaminess, and sidled up to Hanako" Here hanako chan, please eats this. it will make you feel better!" She managed to stuff it into the older girls math and swallow. hanako blinked, her head clearing a bit] "...oh...I feel.." She looekd down at Nagisa "Oh Nagia..." She gave the hild a hug "I am so, so sorry.. for the way I acted..." "Its ok Hanako Chan, it wans't your faut. you were cursed!" "yes.. I was cursed.." She stood up and patted Nagisa's head "I should go now... thank you for the cake Nagisa, it was delicious. I wish you the best.. " [She picked the very weak anthony up and slowy walked off, making her way home] [Nagisa waved afeter her, then ran to her moter's side, ready to share the cake with her and to tell her about the magical kitty. Buy now patients were waking up and the hospital staff were runnign over on alert]
[And that was when their was a meow. Nagisa almost tripped as she realized that Anthony the cat was almost right at her feet.]
- Gaah! Don't do that, Anthony-chan, please, OK?
[Nagisa sighed, putting her hand against a nearby wall, and then blinked as Anthony pointed to her cheesecake and tilted his head, a begging expression on his face.]
...What...You want some more of the cake? Well, OK...
[Nagisa searched around the box the cheesecake had come in, and discovered it came with lots of napkins and plastic knives and folks, and also a couple of plastic bags. She cut off a large wedge off the very big cake, wrapped it in a napkin, and put it in a bag, along with a plastic knife and fork.]
[And then, she held out the whole thing toward Anthony, and sweatdropped a bit when he managed to take it with one of his paws with no problem. Were cat's paws really supposed to be able to hold things like that?]
[But then, she grinned - Well, Anthony was Hanako-san's cat, after all. Maybe he wasn't just a ordinary cat in the first place!]
[And then, Anthony meowed at her again and gave her a small bow. Nagisa smiled at him, and gave him a small bow back as he walked away, the plastic bag with the cake in it on his back.]
[And then, she cut off another piece of the cake, and turned toward her mother, who was still looking at the wall, smiling aimlessly.]
- Mama, Mama, look at me, OK?
[She said gently, pulling at her sleeves...]
[Nagisa did not notice that Anthony had turned course to scoop up something from the floor with yet another plastic bag, and was now carrying two plastic bags with him, as he ran out of the hospital.]
[Hanako, in the meanwhile, was sitting in the garden, tears falling from her eyes.]
...It's all over, then, I suppose.
[She whispered.]
- I'm done.
[And that was when there was a meow from her feet. Anthony was looking up at her, holding out a Grief Seed inside a plastic bag with one paw, and a cheesecake wrapped in a napkin in the other.]
...What?
[She whispered, but then sighed a bit, taking the Grief Seed in her hand.]
[There was already so much dark energies leaking from her Soul Gem that she could see the darkness being sucked into the Seed already, even though she hadn't even stuck them together yet.]
...I don't think this is going to work, Anthony -
[She said, and patted his head, awkwardly.]
- But thanks, anyway.
[She then looked at the cheesecake, and then cut off a small square off it, putting it in her mouth. Hmmm....]
[And then, she cut off another square of the cake, and held it out toward Anthony, too. He ate it, a sad expression on his face.]
[She then stuck her Gem to the Seed, just to buy some more time, and first went to her room. She then went into the kitchen, and took out her father's favorite plate, and put a piece of the cheesecake on it, and then put a plate cover over that, so the bugs wouldn't get at it. She put a piece of cheesecake in the fridge, too, for her brother, just in case.]
[And then, she took her father's plate with the cheesecake on it to the dining room table, set a fork and knife next to it. And then, she put a large plastic carrying bag with all the money from her safe on his chair, and then wrote him a note.]
Goodbye.
[Hanako did not realize that the words she wrote on the piece of memo paper were turning into Witch Script, even as she was writing them.]
[And then, she headed out for the gardens for the last time, Anthony in her arms.]
[Finally Nagisa managed to put the cake into her mouth] "Cheesecake mama, our favorite!" [Her mother snapped back to reality and looked down at her daughter] "Nagisa..." [she smbraced her] "I'm sorry sweetie, I must have been sleepwalking. But I am all right now. Did you just give me cheesecake?" "Yep! It is a magic cheesecake that I wished for, the talking kitty granted it, and now I am going to be a magical girl and battle evil!" "Ah, how wonderful!" The doctors found them. Nagisa quickly hid the cake magically.
[She lay among her roses, resembling a wilted flower, her breathing heavy] "... It will probably be a good thing I am gone. I was just the cause of problems. He will be better off without me..." She echoed the voice in her mind, her own voice. a small smile appeared on her lips "..but really, what was the point of all of this? This whole world is so ugly. Let it rot, with all its weeds and pests. I shall remain here forever in my beautiful garden..." [ a drifting rose petal landed gently on her pitch black soul gem, and it shattered, a mass of dark energy exploding forth. The remaining pieces formed to make a newgrief seed with the emblem of a rose and a butterfly she screamed in pain, her body writihng, before going limp, an apparition of her floating above and continuing to scream in pain and madness. Her leaf green hair, in witch red roses were sprouting, drooped until it hid all of her face. A thick gelatinous orange texture covered her torso and arms and her legs became like the roots of a plant. Finally Large Green and black butterfly wings emerged from her back. Through the pain and madness her most of her mind and memories of her former life became lost in the darkness.... a name came through... Gertrude, yes, that was who she was. and this was her beautiful garden....
[Gertrude looked at the strange puffball thing with whiskers, curiously.]
...Anthony?
[She said in the Witch Language though she didn't really understand what this thing was at all.]
- Maybe you should go away, Anthony - You'll stop being a cat at all, if you stick by me anymore...
[And she didn't understand just why those words were spilling out of her mouth, either, but she did feel a odd burst of happiness when the thing shook it's head, and jumped into her arms.]
...All right, then.
[She said, and stroked it's fur.]
- Together to the end, eh?
[And back in the hospital...]
[Nagisa blinked as the doctor told her something rather unexpected.]
...You mean - It's OK if my mother eats cheesecake now?
[The doctor looked at her and nodded, sadly.]
- She can eat anything she wants to, now. Within reason, of course - Overeating is no good.
[And then she sighed a bit.]
...She can also go out of the hospital for a couple of days, if she there's anyplace she wants to go to, as long as she takes her medicine. It's OK, I'll just sign the papers, and she can come back anytime she wants to, too...
[Nagisa looked up at him. That was wonderful news!]
[But then...Why was the doctor looking so sad?]
...But...That means she's better, right?
[The doctor looked at her, and then looked at the middle aged nurse, looking like he wanted to hide in a hole or something. The nurse sighed, and turned toward Nagisa.]
- Nagisa-chan...It's not that your mother is better, it's that - We've decided that it's OK if she eats what she wants, and goes where she wants, too. She's also be moving to a new wing of the hospital, and getting a new doctor, though you're staying here with us for the time being...
[And then she sighed.]
...She said she wanted to visit your family's graves, and also that there were some nice Onsens nearby, too...
[And Nagisa felt like her heart was sinking down to her boots.]
[ did they mean that... no, that couldn't be it! mama was doing well, especially now that she had that magic cheesecake!" "It will be all right, sweetie." the nurse said as she tucked the child back into her bed "We decided that your mother is well enough for a vacation! She needs some fresh air and a break from the treatments." "Can I join her?" Nagisa asked hopefully. Even if she was only in the hospital for a few weeks, she already missed her home and her normal life, even school. and a vacation did sound nice. "Perhaps dear. I am sure you could! As long as you continue taking your mesdicine and your diet. now get some rest, it was a strange night after all." [to be sure the nurse administered a bit of sleep medicine and Nagisa soon fell into dreams of sweets and magical girls.
and meanwhile Kyubey torotted back to his base, feeling satisfied [which was not an emotion, he reminded himself] with today. 2 witches defeated, another one born, reinstalling a reborn magical girl and the ptential of her twin, and forming a new contract with new magical girl with very good potential. Time to file his reports, then get some rest. even super powerful intergalactic beings needed recharge sometimes[
[Nagisa was grinning as her mother talked about their plans for their vacation.]
...Well, first we're going to go visit Uncle Kentaro's house and see your Auntie and cousins, and then we're going to go visit the family graves, and then, we're going to go stay at the Taji Onsen Hotel! Doesn't that sound like fun, Nagisa-chan?
[And Nagisa nodded.]
- Oh, yes!
[But then she paused.]
...But...Um...I can come with you, too, right?
[Her mother nodded, patting her head.]
- Of course you can, Nagisa-chan!
[And then her mother looked at her, smiling.]
...Why, just look at you - You look so genki, today! Your color is much better, and you're walking straight, too...
[Nagisa blinked at that - She really did feel much better then she could remember feeling in months, now that she thought about it.]
[And that was when there was a swish, and something white and fluffy came into the room. Nagisa blinked, and looked at her mother, who apparently hadn't noticed anything strange at all.]
[...So the strange white kitty thing was invisible to normal people? Hmmm...]
[The nurse didn't seem to notice the kitty either] "ah, I'm sorry sweetie, but it's time to bring your mother to her treatments!" "Aw, already?" [hermother patted her on the head, smiling] "We'll see eachother right afterwards, and we can talk more about vacation, and you can tell me more about that magical kitty!" "Okay Mama!" "Now then finish your breakdast, sweetie!" the nurse said kindly " Dr Kenzo will be over in an hour for your examination and to deliver your medicine." [After the nurse wheeled her mother out of her room, Nagisa looked over towards Kyubey] "Oh! It's you, maguc kitty! Wait, so, last night wasn't a dream after all?" "No, it certainly was real." [he hopped onto the bed, treading on her legs lightly "See for yourself!" [He nosed her hand. she let out a small gasp of surprise upon noticing the silver ring on her finger with the same markings as on her soul gem] "It is! I have got this and you are here!" [ through her excitement, her stomach grumbled signaling need for breakfats. She looked pon the tray and made a face at the sight of the unappetizing boring, meager food and medicine. She hated this cut down diet! She wished she could have some sweets with it... *pop!* A cheery pink cupcake suddenly appeared on the tray]
Oh! That's a rather interesting manifestation of your Magical Girl powers, I must admit...
[Nagisa looked at the cupcake, and made a face.]
...You mean, my magical powers made this?
[And then she sighed, her entirely body slumping, and said, plantively - ]
...But what's the use of being able to make sweets, if I'm not allowed to eat them?
[Kyubey laughed at that, his tail lashing at her bedcovers.]
- Oh, Momoe Nagisa - Didn't I tell you? You don't have to worry about things like that anymore, at all!
[And then, he poked her with his paw.]
...You're a Puella Magi now - And you don't ever have to worry about getting sick ever again! Why, you'll even be able to heal from injuries which would kill normal human beings right away - It's the truth, you know! You should just wait a see!
Her eyes widened at this "Really? ?" "In fact, the magic is already affecting your body giving you newfound energy. Your illness is clearing up even as we speak." Nagisa sat up, feeling much better. "I am, cured...?" [their conversation was interupted as the doctor came in for her examination. Like the other, he could not see or hear Kyubey] "Good morning Nagisa chan! How are we feling today?"" "Oh much better!" She exclaimed happily "I am a magical girl now!" "Oh you are? how lovely! You do seem to have more energy now. I'd love to hear more about it. but first, it's time for your checkup." Kyubey walked curled up on the windowsill and the doctor cheked her vitals. "Yes, you are doing very well today..." Nagisa instinctively shrunk in fear as he pulled out the syringes. Not those horrid things again! "Hold still nagisa chan, it will be over very quick. " She squealed in pain, cluthing at the pink and brown plushie tightly as the doctor gave multpile shots, administering her medicine and drawing some blood samples.
[The doctor said brightly, and then he patted her head and went away with the the tubes of blood he'd taken.]
[Nagisa sighed, and slumped back in her bed.]
...I hate all those tests...
[Kyubey laughed, and jumped onto her bed.]
But you wouldn't have to take them anymore, once they figure out you're really better, right?
[Nagisa looked at him, and held out her hand. Kyubey looked at it, and snickered.]
...You can pet me, if you want!
[Not that he really wanted her to, but he was willing to put up with her manhandling him if it made her easier to handle, frankly. And this was only a spare body, after all, and one of many. He surely could find some excuse to get rid of it once Nagisa was gone...]
[And then, he grimanced for a moment as a voice ran thought his head. So just why are you so afraid of human cooties, anyway, Incubator?]
[Nagisa, who did not notice his momentary grimancing, grinned widely at his words, and patted his head and back. Pet pet pet!]
...Ohh, you're so soft, Kyubey!
[And then, she paused.]
- But wait - If the magic is making me better, I should be able to make my Mama better with it too, right?
[Kyubey looked up at her, and blinked his red eyes, once.]
...I'm not sure you can do that, Nagisa - Everybody's Magial Girl powers are different, you see. Puella Magi can heal themselves, usually, but healing other people or other living things is a another matter entirely.
[But Nagisa only heard a bit of that part of her stomach grumbled again, remininding her she needed to eat, and more tan the boring hospital glop, so she went to devour her cupcake. It was perhaps one of the best cupcakes she had ever had!] "mmm so yummy! I missed sweets!" [The pain from the shots had already faded, the tiny holes already patched up.] "Now then, to business." Kyubey said calmly, remaining at his spot "You have recived your wish and unlocked your power as a magical girl. It is your duty now, to battle witches." [Nagisa finised her cupcake, crumbs and pink frosting lining her round cheeks] "Eh? Witches?" [An image of a wicked yet beautiful sorceress like from her favorite series crossed her mind] "Yes, that is what they are called. That monster here last nigth was one of them. They are cursed beings of dark magic that bring despair and other negative emotions to humans. They can only be defeated by magical girls."
"then can't you just find my blood samples, if you found the wrong ones?" Nagisa whined, drawing away as the doctor took her arm and prepared it for more shots. She really did not want to go through this again. "Do you have to inject more medicie too?" "No, just the blood." he smiled at her gently "Ready? Hold still please." and there came the shots again. She gave a pained whimper. After some time he was done "And there we go! Good girl" he patted her head He and the nurse left and Kyubey hopped back on at the bed. Nagisa rubbed her sore arm, but the pain was soon ebbing away "Sorry about that, kitty" "Actually, my name is Kyubey"
[Nagisa laughed, and patted him again, dragging him onto her lap. Kyubey twiched for a moment, but then smiled up at her, letting her pet his head.]
...So I'm supposed to go fight Witches, now? Cool!
[And Kyubey nodded at her.]
It's good to see you're so enthusiastic about this, Nagisa!
[And then, he jumped off the bed, and took a "lecturing" pose.]
- Since this is your very first time to actually fight Witches, I've called another Magical Girl to help you out. Real Magical Girls usually don't fight together, but Tomoe Mami has been kind enough to offer to show you the ropes, so...
[Nagisa blinked at that.]
...Wait, you mean real Magical Girls don't usually fight together with their friends? ...But why? That doesn't sound like fun at all!
[Kyubey looked at her with his red unblinking eyes, then.]
- Well, the thing is - Magical Girls need things called Grief Seeds to clean off their Soul Gems when they get tarnished, and the only way to get them is to destroy Witches. And it's one Grief Seed per one Witch, usually - And Witches don't usually wander around in groups as a rule of thumb, though there is sometimes more then one Witch per Witch Barrier, I must admit.
[Like when there was one original Witch plus several Familiars upgraded enough to drop Grief Seeds themselves (which did make them Witches, in his opinion), for instance - Oh, yikes, that was a real nightmare scenario, he'd lost so many Magical Girls before they even came close to becoming Witches that way. And most of the time, they wouldn't even listen to him when he tried to talk about how coorporating with other Magical Girls was actually neccesary every once in a while, either!]
[...Oh, but he wasn't going to start talking about Familiars now - Nagisa was confused enough as it was, he was pretty sure.]
It just makes more sense for them to spread themselves out, I think - I mean, you don't want Magical Girls fighting among themselves all the time, just because they couldn't decide who gets the Grief Seed, right?
[Nagisa nodded] "But couldn't you just clean the soul gem off with soap? Or that stuff that cleans jewelry?" [ah girls have tried that before. yubey shook his head] "No, only the grief seed can. It absorbs all the impurities and such from the soul gem, restoing the soul gem to it's bright state." "Well I suppose it is best to keep it looking pretty" Nagisa looked down at the egg shaped jewel in her hands "It's mroe than hat. The soul gem contains the essence of a magical girl. The more it fades, the weaker you and your magic become. And if it goes completely dark, then you aren't a magical girl anymore" [And of course having enough of the magical girl life, some girls took that to mean simply not being a magical girl and going back to their normal life, so they didn't bother with the grief seeds anymore. How wrong they were.]
Nagisa emitted a shudder of fear. So did that mean that if her magic ran out, she would become sick again, or something like that? No, she had to stay positive] "Well I won't let that happen! I am going to be the best magial girl and save people from the evil witch monsters!" She pumped with energy
[Kyubey smiled at her, fakely, and then he turned toward the window.]
- Alright, then - Let's get out of this building first, and then you should transform and follow me!]
[Nagisa nodded at that.]
...Oh, yeah - It's OK if I go out of the hospital now, since I'm all healthy and all! Right, Kyubey?
[And Kyubey nodded.]
Of course, Nagisa! But now, we should go, right?
[And so she did just as Kyubey said.]
[And about 30 minutes later...]
[Tomoe Mami was glaring at Kyubey, her hands to her hips.]
...Oh, Kyubey, Kyubey, Kyubey - How could you!
[And then she sighed.]
She's...She's just a child, even you should be able to tell that!
...Maa, maa - Calm down, Mami, please, OK?
[Kyubey said, and then looked up at her, trying to make himself look "cute", whatever that actually meant.]
[Nagisa, in the meanwhile, was sweatdropping up a storm. This was not how she had thought her first meeting with another Magical Girl would go, she did have to admit...]
[Still. This was the most beautiful girl she had ever seen, with an air of elegance, maturity sensibility, and knowledge, as well as a kind face. She seemed like a perfect lady, like in those romantic victorian pictures. If this was to be her mentor, Nagisa decided that she wanted to make her proud] "I just turned 10 years old, Miss!" she said, straightening up importantly "I can handle it! Plus Kyubey kitty chose me for this destinty! He believes in me! I can do this, I want to help save people form thiese evil monsters!" [Mami managed a smaile at the little girl. So, she wanted to elp people too? Perhaps, a chance different from the other girls. Maybe this one would work out. Her heart still ached abit from Kyouko leaving...no, this was another chance. and the girl was so darling] "Very well then! I shall show you the ropes]

[The Hanako doll tilted her head, looked a bit sad at this - She wasn't the one who was acting up, after all. The stuffed animal version of Anthony meowed at her, sounding concerned.]
[Kyubey, in the meanwhile, was looking up at Nagisa, a fake concerned expression on hsi face.]
...Yes, there she is - But I'm not at all sure she'll be able destroy the Witch in time to save your mother and the other people, I'm afraid - There're at least 7 Familiars wandering around here, after all.
[Nagisa stared at him, her eyes widening. What did he mean, he wasn't sure Hanako-san could save her mother? Hanako-san was a Magical Girl, and Magical Girls went and saved people, right? That was what they were all about!]
...Wha...What's a Familiar?
[Kyubey sighed at that.]
- Familiars are monsters that Witches tend to produce - They're sort of like minor Witches, and they can get upgraded to full Witches themselves, if you're unlucky. They're quite dangerous in their own way, so.
[And then he sighed again, theratically.]
...Oh, if only there was another Magical Girl who could come and help her fight that Witch and her Familiars...

"That is right. I have sensed great potential for the role within you."
[If it weren't for the disturbing circumstance currently, this would be a dream come true for Nagisa] " You can do that? Well I'm sure you could since your'e a magical kitty. But, What do you mean by a contract? "
"Just a formal term really for our agreement. I shall unlock your magical abilities, and furthermore, I shall grant you one wish. In exchange, it shall be your duty to battle this wicked monsters and defend humanity when the time calls for it." [as usual, he leaves out the fine details.] "So? what do you think?

[And then she looked up at her, tears in her eyes.]
...And I didn't really die either - That wasn't real! It was all a bad dream, Hanako-chan - don't you see?
[And someplace nearby in the Witch's Barrier...]
[Nagisa bit her lip, thinking furiously. This really was like something out of the Beautiful Moonstar series, she thought...Though she hadn't realized that the battles the Moonstars went through really were this scary, to be frank.]
- So I make a, um, "contract" with you, and I can be a Magical Girl? With real magic and everything?
[Kyubey smiled up at her, and nodded.]
...Oh, yes you can - And you'll even get a Wish granted in the bargain, like I said!
[He then put on his "I am a wise and experienced Magical Mascot" face.]
...I really can grant you almost any Wish you can think of, you know...
[Nagisa nodded at that - She'd never heard of any of the Magical Mascots in any of the Magical Girl series she heard of ever offering to grant wishes like this, in addition to turning anybody into a Magical Girl, but it did sound like a good bargain, she thought...]
[And that was when Hanako came crashing through the corridors Nagisa and Kyubey were talking in, roaring.]
- Oh, shut up, shut up, you're not real, none of this is, you - you monster!
[The Witch wearing Hanako's mother's visage looked terribly sad, at that.]
...Oh, Hanako-chan...
[Nagisa stared at both of them, and then turned around, looking for her own mother. She managed to catch sight of her just as she was about to go into run of the rooms of this strange place, and quickly ran after her, pulling her over to were she and Kyubey were talking. Nagisa's mother followed her without protest, blank-eyed, though she still smiled into the thin air, talking to her deceased husband.]
...Look, husband! Nagisa is talking already - She's such a smart little girl...
[Oh, no! Nagisa bit her lip, and then stood up as an idea struck her.]
- OK, Kyubey, I'll do it - And I've thought of a really good wish, too! The best!
[Kyubey smiled up at her.]
...All right, then - Let's do this thing!
[And then he gestured at her, and they both ducked behind some lockers.]
[Nagisa took a deep breath.]
- My wish is that I want a cheesecake to appear, and it's not going to be any kind of ordinary cheesecake - It has to be absolutely the very best cheesecake in the world! And it's going to be so good that anybody who eats even a little bit of it would immediately remember all the good things that ever happened to them, and throw off any bad spell anybody put on them! Oh, and they'll regain their sanity even if they weren't under a bad spell, either, because it's just. So. Good!
[And then she took a deep breath.]
...Oh, and it's a magical cheesecake, so it never goes bad, either. So there!
[And Kyubey smiled, as his ears rose into the air with the magical energies swirling around them.]
- Done!
[And a gigantic whole cheesecake in a box started to form right in front of them...]

"Oh thank you! It looks so wonderful!"
" the contract is made!" [In kyuubey's unseen records, the data of this latest 'transaction' is put in] "Now then, for your part. Hold still, please." [He sidles up closely, then plunges his long appendages into her chest.
Nagisa lets out a scream, the pain is immense, as if something very important from being drawn from her. She falls to the floor, and the pain ebbs, the shining light from her chest forming into a prettyegg shaped gold cased jewel]
"Go on, take it and accept your destiny. This is your soul gem, the oroof as a magical girl and container for your power." kyubey said pleantly, sitting back.
"pretty..." As Nagisa takes it, she feels a new rush of energy, almost like a fresh battery.
Shortyly after, the scenery goes back to the normal hospital.
[Hanako has finally defeated the witch. chuckling weakly and splashed with blood. Anothony lays at her feet, gravely injred by the battle. Hanako turns to her still concious father with a cheerful smile "Look Papa! I destroyed the monster! you're safe now! And those nasty men won't be coming back to the garden anymore."

[Hanako stared at him.]
- That wasn't my mother, and that wasn't your wife, either.
[And then she snarled at him.]
...My actual mother ran away with our gardener, and then she got sick and died far away in another country.
[And then she sighed, looking down. She'd liked Albert-san a whole lot, back when she was young, and he'd been so patient with her, teaching her the ins and outs of gardening...]
We didn't even get to see her before she died, because nobody expected her to die in such a simple operation, but she did.
[And then she glared at her father, her eyes beginning to go red, and the dark energies rising around her. Anthony meowed at her feet, starting to look almost as creepy as his stuffed animal version had.]
- Why are you so weak, Papa! I tried so hard to make things right, but you always...you always....
[Hanako's father took a step back, his eyes going even wider.]
...No, no - Don't you see I didn't want to wake up from that dream, even if it was just a dream? ...But then you...you always...
[And then he stopped moving back, and stood up straight, glaring right back at her.]
- And you say she was a fake, but then, what are you? My daughter Hanako was a good girl, she didn't run around with suspicious people and pull money out of thin air!
[Nagisa stared at Hanako and her father from behind a locker, Kyubey at her side.]
[Uh, oh, this didn't look good - This didn't look good at all!]

[as she fell to her knees, no one except Kyubey noticed the cracks appearing at her nearly completely black soul gem]
[Nagisa whimpered] Poor poor Hanako... She's probably cursed too!" She then got an idea and scooped out a piece of cheesecake, at perfect creaminess, and sidled up to Hanako" Here hanako chan, please eats this. it will make you feel better!" She managed to stuff it into the older girls math and swallow.
hanako blinked, her head clearing a bit] "...oh...I feel.." She looekd down at Nagisa "Oh Nagia..." She gave the hild a hug "I am so, so sorry.. for the way I acted..."
"Its ok Hanako Chan, it wans't your faut. you were cursed!"
"yes.. I was cursed.." She stood up and patted Nagisa's head "I should go now... thank you for the cake Nagisa, it was delicious. I wish you the best.. " [She picked the very weak anthony up and slowy walked off, making her way home]
[Nagisa waved afeter her, then ran to her moter's side, ready to share the cake with her and to tell her about the magical kitty. Buy now patients were waking up and the hospital staff were runnign over on alert]

[Nagisa sighed, putting her hand against a nearby wall, and then blinked as Anthony pointed to her cheesecake and tilted his head, a begging expression on his face.]
...What...You want some more of the cake? Well, OK...
[Nagisa searched around the box the cheesecake had come in, and discovered it came with lots of napkins and plastic knives and folks, and also a couple of plastic bags. She cut off a large wedge off the very big cake, wrapped it in a napkin, and put it in a bag, along with a plastic knife and fork.]
[And then, she held out the whole thing toward Anthony, and sweatdropped a bit when he managed to take it with one of his paws with no problem. Were cat's paws really supposed to be able to hold things like that?]
[But then, she grinned - Well, Anthony was Hanako-san's cat, after all. Maybe he wasn't just a ordinary cat in the first place!]
[And then, Anthony meowed at her again and gave her a small bow. Nagisa smiled at him, and gave him a small bow back as he walked away, the plastic bag with the cake in it on his back.]
[And then, she cut off another piece of the cake, and turned toward her mother, who was still looking at the wall, smiling aimlessly.]
- Mama, Mama, look at me, OK?
[She said gently, pulling at her sleeves...]
[Nagisa did not notice that Anthony had turned course to scoop up something from the floor with yet another plastic bag, and was now carrying two plastic bags with him, as he ran out of the hospital.]
[Hanako, in the meanwhile, was sitting in the garden, tears falling from her eyes.]
...It's all over, then, I suppose.
[She whispered.]
- I'm done.
[And that was when there was a meow from her feet. Anthony was looking up at her, holding out a Grief Seed inside a plastic bag with one paw, and a cheesecake wrapped in a napkin in the other.]
...What?
[She whispered, but then sighed a bit, taking the Grief Seed in her hand.]
[There was already so much dark energies leaking from her Soul Gem that she could see the darkness being sucked into the Seed already, even though she hadn't even stuck them together yet.]
...I don't think this is going to work, Anthony -
[She said, and patted his head, awkwardly.]
- But thanks, anyway.
[She then looked at the cheesecake, and then cut off a small square off it, putting it in her mouth. Hmmm....]
[And then, she cut off another square of the cake, and held it out toward Anthony, too. He ate it, a sad expression on his face.]
[She then stuck her Gem to the Seed, just to buy some more time, and first went to her room. She then went into the kitchen, and took out her father's favorite plate, and put a piece of the cheesecake on it, and then put a plate cover over that, so the bugs wouldn't get at it. She put a piece of cheesecake in the fridge, too, for her brother, just in case.]
[And then, she took her father's plate with the cheesecake on it to the dining room table, set a fork and knife next to it. And then, she put a large plastic carrying bag with all the money from her safe on his chair, and then wrote him a note.]
Goodbye.
[Hanako did not realize that the words she wrote on the piece of memo paper were turning into Witch Script, even as she was writing them.]
[And then, she headed out for the gardens for the last time, Anthony in her arms.]

Date: 2014-07-26 07:11 am (UTC)[Her mother snapped back to reality and looked down at her daughter] "Nagisa..." [she smbraced her] "I'm sorry sweetie, I must have been sleepwalking. But I am all right now. Did you just give me cheesecake?"
"Yep! It is a magic cheesecake that I wished for, the talking kitty granted it, and now I am going to be a magical girl and battle evil!"
"Ah, how wonderful!"
The doctors found them. Nagisa quickly hid the cake magically.
[She lay among her roses, resembling a wilted flower, her breathing heavy] "... It will probably be a good thing I am gone. I was just the cause of problems. He will be better off without me..." She echoed the voice in her mind, her own voice. a small smile appeared on her lips "..but really, what was the point of all of this? This whole world is so ugly. Let it rot, with all its weeds and pests. I shall remain here forever in my beautiful garden..." [ a drifting rose petal landed gently on her pitch black soul gem, and it shattered, a mass of dark energy exploding forth. The remaining pieces formed to make a newgrief seed with the emblem of a rose and a butterfly she screamed in pain, her body writihng, before going limp, an apparition of her floating above and continuing to scream in pain and madness. Her leaf green hair, in witch red roses were sprouting, drooped until it hid all of her face. A thick gelatinous orange texture covered her torso and arms and her legs became like the roots of a plant. Finally Large Green and black butterfly wings emerged from her back. Through the pain and madness her most of her mind and memories of her former life became lost in the darkness.... a name came through... Gertrude, yes, that was who she was. and this was her beautiful garden....

[She said in the Witch Language though she didn't really understand what this thing was at all.]
- Maybe you should go away, Anthony - You'll stop being a cat at all, if you stick by me anymore...
[And she didn't understand just why those words were spilling out of her mouth, either, but she did feel a odd burst of happiness when the thing shook it's head, and jumped into her arms.]
...All right, then.
[She said, and stroked it's fur.]
- Together to the end, eh?
[And back in the hospital...]
[Nagisa blinked as the doctor told her something rather unexpected.]
...You mean - It's OK if my mother eats cheesecake now?
[The doctor looked at her and nodded, sadly.]
- She can eat anything she wants to, now. Within reason, of course - Overeating is no good.
[And then she sighed a bit.]
...She can also go out of the hospital for a couple of days, if she there's anyplace she wants to go to, as long as she takes her medicine. It's OK, I'll just sign the papers, and she can come back anytime she wants to, too...
[Nagisa looked up at him. That was wonderful news!]
[But then...Why was the doctor looking so sad?]
...But...That means she's better, right?
[The doctor looked at her, and then looked at the middle aged nurse, looking like he wanted to hide in a hole or something. The nurse sighed, and turned toward Nagisa.]
- Nagisa-chan...It's not that your mother is better, it's that - We've decided that it's OK if she eats what she wants, and goes where she wants, too. She's also be moving to a new wing of the hospital, and getting a new doctor, though you're staying here with us for the time being...
[And then she sighed.]
...She said she wanted to visit your family's graves, and also that there were some nice Onsens nearby, too...
[And Nagisa felt like her heart was sinking down to her boots.]

"Can I join her?" Nagisa asked hopefully. Even if she was only in the hospital for a few weeks, she already missed her home and her normal life, even school. and a vacation did sound nice.
"Perhaps dear. I am sure you could! As long as you continue taking your mesdicine and your diet. now get some rest, it was a strange night after all." [to be sure the nurse administered a bit of sleep medicine and Nagisa soon fell into dreams of sweets and magical girls.
and meanwhile Kyubey torotted back to his base, feeling satisfied [which was not an emotion, he reminded himself] with today. 2 witches defeated, another one born, reinstalling a reborn magical girl and the ptential of her twin, and forming a new contract with new magical girl with very good potential. Time to file his reports, then get some rest. even super powerful intergalactic beings needed recharge sometimes[

...Well, first we're going to go visit Uncle Kentaro's house and see your Auntie and cousins, and then we're going to go visit the family graves, and then, we're going to go stay at the Taji Onsen Hotel! Doesn't that sound like fun, Nagisa-chan?
[And Nagisa nodded.]
- Oh, yes!
[But then she paused.]
...But...Um...I can come with you, too, right?
[Her mother nodded, patting her head.]
- Of course you can, Nagisa-chan!
[And then her mother looked at her, smiling.]
...Why, just look at you - You look so genki, today! Your color is much better, and you're walking straight, too...
[Nagisa blinked at that - She really did feel much better then she could remember feeling in months, now that she thought about it.]
[And that was when there was a swish, and something white and fluffy came into the room. Nagisa blinked, and looked at her mother, who apparently hadn't noticed anything strange at all.]
[...So the strange white kitty thing was invisible to normal people? Hmmm...]

[After the nurse wheeled her mother out of her room, Nagisa looked over towards Kyubey] "Oh! It's you, maguc kitty! Wait, so, last night wasn't a dream after all?"
"No, it certainly was real." [he hopped onto the bed, treading on her legs lightly "See for yourself!" [He nosed her hand. she let out a small gasp of surprise upon noticing the silver ring on her finger with the same markings as on her soul gem]
"It is! I have got this and you are here!" [ through her excitement, her stomach grumbled signaling need for breakfats. She looked pon the tray and made a face at the sight of the unappetizing boring, meager food and medicine. She hated this cut down diet! She wished she could have some sweets with it... *pop!* A cheery pink cupcake suddenly appeared on the tray]

...You're a Puella Magi now - And you don't ever have to worry about getting sick ever again! Why, you'll even be able to heal from injuries which would kill normal human beings right away - It's the truth, you know! You should just wait a see!

Nagisa sat up, feeling much better. "I am, cured...?"
[their conversation was interupted as the doctor came in for her examination. Like the other, he could not see or hear Kyubey]
"Good morning Nagisa chan! How are we feling today?""
"Oh much better!" She exclaimed happily "I am a magical girl now!"
"Oh you are? how lovely! You do seem to have more energy now. I'd love to hear more about it. but first, it's time for your checkup." Kyubey walked curled up on the windowsill and the doctor cheked her vitals. "Yes, you are doing very well today..."
Nagisa instinctively shrunk in fear as he pulled out the syringes. Not those horrid things again!
"Hold still nagisa chan, it will be over very quick. "
She squealed in pain, cluthing at the pink and brown plushie tightly as the doctor gave multpile shots, administering her medicine and drawing some blood samples.

[Nagisa looked at him, and held out her hand. Kyubey looked at it, and snickered.]
...You can pet me, if you want!
[Not that he really wanted her to, but he was willing to put up with her manhandling him if it made her easier to handle, frankly. And this was only a spare body, after all, and one of many. He surely could find some excuse to get rid of it once Nagisa was gone...]

[Kyubey looked up at her, and blinked his red eyes, once.]
...I'm not sure you can do that, Nagisa - Everybody's Magial Girl powers are different, you see. Puella Magi can heal themselves, usually, but healing other people or other living things is a another matter entirely.

[Nagisa finised her cupcake, crumbs and pink frosting lining her round cheeks] "Eh? Witches?" [An image of a wicked yet beautiful sorceress like from her favorite series crossed her mind]
"Yes, that is what they are called. That monster here last nigth was one of them. They are cursed beings of dark magic that bring despair and other negative emotions to humans. They can only be defeated by magical girls."

[And Kyubey nodded, his red eyes on her.]
- That's correct. And since this is your first fight...
[And that is when the doctor running back into her hospital room, panting.]
...Nagisa-chan! I'm really sorry, but I'm afraid we have to take all your blood tests again...
[Nagisa stared at him, and huddled under her blankets, while Kyubey quickly jumped under her bed.]
...But- But I just took them, doctor!
- Yes, yes, I know, and I'm really sorry, but I really have to take them again! The results were all wrong, you see...
[Nagisa stared at him so more, and then looked at the nurse.]
...I'm getting worse?
[The nurse shook her head, looking bemused indeed.]
- Um, no, my dear - It's the other way around, actually!
[And then she snickered a bit. Nagisa-chan really looked so much better, today!]
The results were good, much too good - And now Dr Yamazaki is worried that he had the wrong blood sample checked out, you see...

He and the nurse left and Kyubey hopped back on at the bed. Nagisa rubbed her sore arm, but the pain was soon ebbing away "Sorry about that, kitty"

...So I'm supposed to go fight Witches, now? Cool!
[And Kyubey nodded at her.]
It's good to see you're so enthusiastic about this, Nagisa!
[And then, he jumped off the bed, and took a "lecturing" pose.]
- Since this is your very first time to actually fight Witches, I've called another Magical Girl to help you out. Real Magical Girls usually don't fight together, but Tomoe Mami has been kind enough to offer to show you the ropes, so...
[Nagisa blinked at that.]
...Wait, you mean real Magical Girls don't usually fight together with their friends? ...But why? That doesn't sound like fun at all!
[Kyubey looked at her with his red unblinking eyes, then.]
- Well, the thing is - Magical Girls need things called Grief Seeds to clean off their Soul Gems when they get tarnished, and the only way to get them is to destroy Witches. And it's one Grief Seed per one Witch, usually - And Witches don't usually wander around in groups as a rule of thumb, though there is sometimes more then one Witch per Witch Barrier, I must admit.
[Like when there was one original Witch plus several Familiars upgraded enough to drop Grief Seeds themselves (which did make them Witches, in his opinion), for instance - Oh, yikes, that was a real nightmare scenario, he'd lost so many Magical Girls before they even came close to becoming Witches that way. And most of the time, they wouldn't even listen to him when he tried to talk about how coorporating with other Magical Girls was actually neccesary every once in a while, either!]

Date: 2014-08-09 05:26 am (UTC)[ah girls have tried that before. yubey shook his head] "No, only the grief seed can. It absorbs all the impurities and such from the soul gem, restoing the soul gem to it's bright state."
"Well I suppose it is best to keep it looking pretty" Nagisa looked down at the egg shaped jewel in her hands
"It's mroe than hat. The soul gem contains the essence of a magical girl. The more it fades, the weaker you and your magic become. And if it goes completely dark, then you aren't a magical girl anymore" [And of course having enough of the magical girl life, some girls took that to mean simply not being a magical girl and going back to their normal life, so they didn't bother with the grief seeds anymore. How wrong they were.]
Nagisa emitted a shudder of fear. So did that mean that if her magic ran out, she would become sick again, or something like that? No, she had to stay positive] "Well I won't let that happen! I am going to be the best magial girl and save people from the evil witch monsters!" She pumped with energy

[And Kyubey nodded.]
Of course, Nagisa! But now, we should go, right?
[And so she did just as Kyubey said.]
[And about 30 minutes later...]
[Tomoe Mami was glaring at Kyubey, her hands to her hips.]
...Oh, Kyubey, Kyubey, Kyubey - How could you!
[And then she sighed.]
She's...She's just a child, even you should be able to tell that!
...Maa, maa - Calm down, Mami, please, OK?
[Kyubey said, and then looked up at her, trying to make himself look "cute", whatever that actually meant.]
[Nagisa, in the meanwhile, was sweatdropping up a storm. This was not how she had thought her first meeting with another Magical Girl would go, she did have to admit...]
